Photographer's Statement
There are many kinds of photographers and photography. I describe myself as an illustrative photographer. As such, I am not a photojournalist, an editorial, or a reportage photographer, who work to present the reality of a situation. I work much as a painter, who sits in a field, draws or paints a preliminary scene, and then goes back to their studio to finish. In a digital age, I work as closely as technology allows to the traditional methods of printing in a darkroom: burning, dodging, contrast and saturation control. I try to end up with what I felt at the time the shutter was released and not just with what I saw. One image may take many attempts over many days to produce. To that end, I hope my photographs create an image, unto themselves, in the moment of viewing, and have a timelessness of presence. No special effects were used in the making of my photographs. CHK
